EVERETT

My heart was in my throat as I waited to see how Milo would react. He hadn’t run away screaming when I’d shifted, which boded well, but he seemed to be in shock. His eyes were slightly glazed and he kept unconsciously shaking his head.

“I can’t be,” he said eventually.

“I assure you, you are.” The fact my teeth kept dropping and my dick kept hardening when he was around would tell me so, even if his scent hadn’t.

“But…” He frowned, as though puzzled. “This is like some weird psychedelic dream. Two supernatural men supposedly think I’m their mate? Not possible. I’m invisible. I’m nothing special. No one ever sees me or wants me.”

My jaw clenched. “You’re beautiful,” I growled.

He looked alarmed, and I forced my bear to calm down.

“Milo,” I said softly. “You are the most gorgeous, wonderful, gentle man I’ve ever met. You’re a treasure. You’re meant for me. My heart knows it, and my bear does too.”

His frown softened, and his eyes shone with hope, but he bit his lip and looked down. I ground my teeth together. I didn’t know how to make him believe me.

“Don’t you feel it?” I asked urgently. “The connection? I constantly want to be with you. Touch you. Know everything about you. Being apart from you is excruciating. I just want to kiss you, then bury myself in you and make you mine.”

He looked up at me, his pupils massive, and I could smell his arousal. My bear roared internally. He wanted me too. There was no denying it.

“That’s what it is?” His voice was quiet. “It’s strange, but I felt like I could trust you as soon as I met you, and that never happens with me. Something about being near you reassures me, and yes, I feel the attraction too, but I don’t understand how I can be your mate.” His mouth turned down. “I’m human.”

“Are you?” I asked. “Do you know who your parents are?”

“No.” He bit his lip. “But I’m not magical.”

“Maybe not,” I allowed. “But you could have shifter blood. Or maybe you are a human. Mates don’t have to be the same species. My mate could be a bear shifter, or a human, or a lion shifter, or a warlock.”

“Oh, Gods.” Milo leaned against me, and I wrapped my arms around him, inhaling his addictive scent. “Warlocks are a thing? Is that like a male witch?”

“They can be either male or female,” I told him. “Warlocks are inherently magical, while witches use potions and poultices. They might have a hint of magic, but usually they fall more in the category of being healers.”

“You’re serious?” He looked up at me fretfully. “You’re not putting me on, are you?”

My eyebrows lowered. “No. I wouldn’t do that to you. They exist. Shifters, warlocks, witches, vampires—”

“Vampires?” Now he looked like he might be sick. “Are they around here?”

“We don’t have a local coven, but there are a couple of lone vampires in the next town over.”

I could smell his fear, and I didn’t like it.
